Our History

Western archaeological evidence has so far supported more than 10,000 years of occupation by the Gitxsan. The English translation of the Gitxsan is “People of the River of Mist”.   Settlement of the area by non-Gitxsan began around the turn of the century. Gitxsan people have lived on the territory since creation.   Interaction with explorers and settlers began around 1866.



  • 1830B.C.'s aboriginal population drops to 70,000 due to epidemic disease brought by Europeans. The population was estimated to be several hundred thousand strong prior to contact.
