Phase 3 Housing Repair Project

Update to Gitsegukla Members

May 1, 2017

Since the summer of 2015, your Council has been working closely with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) to plan and undertake a housing repair project for our community. The goal of this project is to provide needed repairs to all homes within the community by 2019, with the repairs focused on making homes Warm, Safe, and Dry (WS&D). Examples of these repairs include replacing furnaces and chimneys, constructing/repairing stairs and disability ramps, upgrading fire escapes, upgrading electrical systems, replacing roofs, and other repairs.

Phases 1 and 2 are now finished; Over the last two years, over 130 homes have had repairs made following this approach.

The success of Phase 1 and 2 has allowed your Council to request and receive additional funding for the project, and we are pleased to be able to use these funds to make further, final WS&D repairs to an additional 46 homes in the community between May and November 2017. The focus of Phase 3 will be repair work pertaining to window replacements, insulation upgrades, entrance door replacements, patio door replacements, bathroom renovations, and kitchen exhaust fan installations.

At the end of Phase 3, approximately 85 homes in the community will remain to be completed. Your Council will continue working with INAC to obtain the funding needed for repair work to these homes. Council intends to complete all remaining housing repair work in the community by the fall of 2019.

Your housing repair project team will continue to provide updates to the Project on a regular basis. If you have any questions please contact Darrell Turner, Housing Coordinator at 250.849.5490.

Thank you,

Gitsegukla Band Council
