On March 28, 2020, the Provincial Health Officer for British Columbia, Dr. Bonnie Henry, respectfully asked BC First Nations to cease all gatherings that would pose a risk to their elders and member with pre-existing medical conditions. Dr. Bonnie Henry reiterated the importance of not coming together physically, but understands it is challenging when ceremonies are also important. She encourages the gatherings for ceremonial purposes to be done virtually and continue with precautionary measures that will not endanger the lives of elders and those with underlying medical issues. Our Gatekeepers are doing their best to protect Gitsegukla, however there are still some people that are not complying with Council’s protection measures and some are even putting the Gatekeeper’s lives at risk by forcefully entering the community. This is very concerning. It is in the best interest of every resident to know who may pose a risk to their health and self-isolation efforts.

As Gitsegukla First Nation moves into the closure of all public facilities, there is a growing concern around elder care. To date, there are 50 elders over the age of 60. We currently have two Home-Makers and one Personal Care Aid. If one of the staff members falls ill, that staff member will be required to self-quarantine.
Community Protection Measures – Level 3

As a precautionary measure and to protect against the potential harm of the COVID-19 virus, our community has begun Level 3 protection measures.
Effective immediately, community access will be gated and monitored 24/7. The community is now only open to local residents and essential personnel e.g. medical or elder care. By implementing Level-3, Community Protection Measures will significantly lower the risk of infection within Gitsegukla. Gitsegukla Administration, Health and Education facilities are closed until further notice as precautionary measure.
All staff in all departments are required to work remotely, effective immediately. Staff members will be equipped to receive emails to their work email addresses. Essential services personnel will be equipped to receive phone calls through our regular phone system, e.g. Patient Travel, Social Development, and some Admin staff… read more in the pdf below.
Keeping in mind that some community members may be experiencing financial stress during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Gitsegukla Chief and Council have approved payment relief for the month of April 2020 for all tenants in Band Rental Units and Gitsegukla Internet Service subscribers, as detailed below.
