Governance

The Gitsegukla First Nation Council is an elected governing body that provides leadership, governance, strategic direction, and oversight for the community. Council works collaboratively with the Band Manager to support the effective delivery of programs and services within Gitsegukla.
Council is responsible for reviewing and approving annual budgets, policies, major initiatives, and community priorities presented by management and administration. Council also provides guidance, feedback, and direction to the Band Manager on matters impacting the community and works to ensure accountability, transparency, and alignment with the long-term goals and interests of Gitsegukla First Nation.
Programs and service areas supported through Council governance include housing, health and social development, education, infrastructure, environmental stewardship, cultural initiatives, and community development. Council also participates in consultation, negotiations, and decision-making related to band land, title, rights, resources, and other legal or governance matters connected to Gitsegukla First Nation.
Council members are elected to four-year terms. Due to the long-term nature of community planning, infrastructure, governance, and development projects, initiatives often continue across multiple Council terms and require ongoing collaboration, continuity, and transition between elected Councils.
